Dame Katherine Grainger Calls for More Major Sporting Events in Britain

Outgoing UK Sport chair Dame Katherine Grainger has expressed frustration over the lack of major sporting events scheduled in Britain beyond 2028, warning of a “big gap” that could impact public investment, global reputation, and opportunities for athletes.

Grainger, who has led UK Sport for eight years, emphasized the importance of maintaining Britain’s strong reputation for hosting global events.

While Britain is set to host the women’s Rugby World Cup this year, the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the 2028 men’s European Championship, Grainger highlighted the need for more “mega-events” to avoid “fallow years.”

She pointed to potential targets such as the 2029 World Athletics Championships and the 2031 Ryder Cup.

Grainger also reflected on her tenure, during which UK Sport secured record government funding and implemented measures to improve athlete welfare.

As she transitions to her new role as the first female chair of the British Olympic Association, Grainger remains optimistic about Britain’s future in global sport but stresses the need for collaboration and ambition.
