The third National Athletics Trials take center stage at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, this Saturday, March 29, 2025, with a highly anticipated Uganda vs. Kenya showdown in the 4x100m relays.
The trials, organized by the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), will once again bring together some of East Africa’s top athletes in a bid to fine-tune their performances ahead of major international competitions.
With Uganda celebrating 100 years of athletics, this event is not only a platform for qualification but also an opportunity to unearth new talent.
The sprint relays will be the highlight of the day, as Ugandan sprinters battle their Kenyan counterparts in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m races.
This rare head-to-head contest is expected to add an extra layer of intensity to the competition, especially as Uganda’s short-distance runners continue to push for global recognition.
The competition kicks off at 9:30 AM with javelin throw and shot put for women and men, followed by a stacked schedule of events, including the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, and 5000m races.
Field events such as the long jump, shot put, and discus throw will also feature prominently. The day will conclude with the 4x100m relays at 2:35 PM (women) and 2:45 PM (men), before the 4x400m mixed relay at 3:05 PM.
Uganda’s sprinters will be keen to prove themselves against their Kenyan rivals, with the host nation hoping to showcase improved speed on Namboole’s renovated tartan track, which has already received praise from athletes and officials alike.
The relays could also serve as a prelude to future regional battles, setting the tone for upcoming championships in Africa and beyond.
