Major League Soccer’s LAFC and Mexico’s Club America may face off in a one-off playoff to claim the final spot in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
The potential matchup arises after Club Leon was removed from the tournament due to FIFA’s multi-club ownership rules, which prohibit dual ownership conflicts with fellow qualifiers Pachuca.
LAFC previously lost to Club Leon in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League final, while Club America ranks as the next eligible team based on confederation standings.
FIFA stated, “It is considering one play-off match between LAFC and Club America for the right to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.”
Club Leon’s Group D slot alongside Chelsea, Flamengo, and Esperance Sportive de Tunisie remains vacant while Leon appeals the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Costa Rican side Alajuelense, which first challenged Leon’s eligibility, also has an outstanding appeal, with hearings set for April 23.
LAFC’s roster boasts stars like Olivier Giroud and Hugo Lloris, adding intrigue to their potential playoff match. The expanded 32-team Club World Cup will take place across the United States from June 15 to July 13.
