Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool hangs in the balance, with BBC Sport reporting advanced talks between the England full-back and Real Madrid regarding a potential free transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu.
This development comes amidst a backdrop of contract uncertainty for several key Liverpool players, adding to the mounting pressure on the club.
Alexander-Arnold, whose current contract expires at the end of the season, has been a pivotal figure in Liverpool’s recent success.
However, the allure of Real Madrid, coupled with the lack of a new contract agreement, has ignited speculation about his departure.
The 26-year-old’s absence from England’s recent World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia due to an ankle injury, sustained during Liverpool’s Champions League last-16 exit to Paris Saint-Germain in March, has further complicated matters.
Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, addressed the situation, stating that Alexander-Arnold is currently focused solely on his recovery.
“His situation is that unfortunately he is injured. Otherwise people probably would have spoken about him having one or two brilliant performances for the England team,” Slot said. “But he is injured so for him he is fully focused for his recovery and for us we are trying to help him to be back as early as he can.”
The Alexander-Arnold saga is not an isolated incident. Liverpool are also grappling with the contract situations of captain Virgil van Dijk and star forward Mohamed Salah, both of whom are also out of contract at the end of the season.
Salah, in January, indicated that an agreement with the club was “far away,” while Van Dijk, in March, admitted he had “no idea” about his future at Anfield.
Slot acknowledged the ongoing contract negotiations, stating, “It’s a situation that is there for eight or nine months now. These three players have performed so well under these circumstances. So no it does not affect me at all.”
Despite the off-field distractions, Liverpool remain focused on their Premier League campaign. They currently sit 12 points clear at the top of the table with nine games remaining, and are preparing to face local rivals Everton at Anfield on Wednesday.
