Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has refrained from clarifying Jadon Sancho’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge, acknowledging that the Manchester United loanee “could do better” during his time with the Blues.
Sancho, who joined Chelsea in January on a structured loan deal, is at the center of a complex agreement obligating the club to make the 25-year-old’s move permanent for £20-25 million this summer.
However, the deal also includes a £5 million penalty clause, allowing Chelsea to send the winger back to Manchester United.
Since arriving, Sancho has made 16 Premier League starts, contributing just two goals and five assists. Four of those assists came in his first three league appearances, while his last goal involvement dates back to January 4, when he assisted in a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.
When questioned about Sancho’s situation, Maresca said, “In terms of numbers, he could do better, no doubt. But it’s not just about Jadon—there are other players in similar situations. I speak with Jadon every day, and he just needs to keep giving his best until the end of the season.”
Maresca emphasized his current focus on Chelsea’s remaining nine games rather than decisions regarding next season, but added, “All the players that are here, I want them happy to be here.”
The winger will have an opportunity to shine as Chelsea prepare to face Tottenham on Thursday and Brentford over the weekend. Sancho, who scored in the reverse fixture against Spurs, will be looking to regain form and rediscover the promise he once displayed.
