Bushenyi Core PTC grounds in Bushenyi town is buzzing with excitement as the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ankole Zone girls football tournament kicks off.
Over 64 teams, representing 13 districts from the Ankole zone, have converged for the competition, vying for six coveted slots in the national girls’ football championship.
Teams underwent a mandatory screening exercise to ensure compliance with strict eligibility rules, which included verification through the Education Management Information System (EMIS) and USSSA registration.
Zonal chairman Egidio Mucunguzi emphasized the importance of this measure: “We realized we get many petitions during games because we don’t do this kind of screening. This time, we decided to do it.”
USSSA has deployed Geoffrey Langa to oversee operations, and he praised the zone’s efforts in organizing massive participation, noting, “All qualified teams have turned up, and the athletes look of the required age.”
Among the competing teams, defending champions Boni Consilii appear poised to retain their title, having started the tournament with an emphatic 13-0 victory over Maria Girls.
The competition promises a fierce battle for qualification, culminating on Sunday.
