The Turkish football rivalry between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray took a dramatic turn in the Turkish Cup quarter-final at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, with accusations of a physical altercation involving Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho.
The heated exchange occurred post-match as Mourinho reportedly approached Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk from behind, pinching his nose. The incident left Buruk on the ground, clutching his face, in what Galatasaray officials are calling a “physical attack.”
“We expect Mourinho to face necessary sanctions,” stated Galatasaray Vice-President Metin Ozturk, who criticized Mourinho’s actions as inappropriate. The Federation and Fenerbahce’s management are now under pressure to take swift action.
The match itself saw Galatasaray emerge victorious with a 2-1 win, thanks to a stellar performance from Victor Osimhen, who netted both goals. However, the fiery contest was marred by a melee during stoppage time, which resulted in red cards for Fenerbahce’s Mert Yandas and Galatasaray’s Kerem Demirbay and Baris Yilmaz.
This isn’t the first controversy involving Mourinho and Galatasaray. Following their goalless draw in February, Galatasaray accused the Fenerbahce manager of making racist statements, leading to a four-game ban and fine for the Portuguese coach.
Despite the post-match turbulence, Okan Buruk downplayed the incident in his press conference, describing Mourinho’s actions as “not classy” but refraining from escalating the matter further.
