Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery for a new hamstring injury, the club has confirmed.
This comes as another major blow to the 24-year-old defender, who had already spent three months sidelined with a similar issue earlier in the campaign.
Fofana had only recently returned to first-team action last month but now faces another lengthy recovery period.
The setback means the Frenchman will finish the season with just 14 appearances, as injuries continue to plague his career since his £75 million ($96.6m) move from Leicester City in 2022. Last season, Fofana also endured extended spells out due to a knee injury.
In an official statement, Chelsea addressed the situation: “The club can confirm that defender Wesley Fofana has today undergone successful hamstring surgery. Following assessment by specialists, it was concluded that an operation would be required. Wesley will now begin his recovery and rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff at Cobham. Everyone at the club is fully focused on supporting Wesley in his recovery.”
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca will now have to rely on options such as Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Benoit Badiashile to fill the void left by Fofana.
The Blues, aiming to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League and Champions League qualification, face Brentford on Sunday.
