German football legend Thomas Muller has announced that he will end his remarkable 25-year association with Bayern Munich at the conclusion of the current season.
The 35-year-old midfielder, who joined Bayern’s academy as a child, leaves the club as one of its most celebrated figures.
Muller holds the record for the most appearances in Bayern’s history with 743 matches and sits third on their all-time scoring list with 247 goals.
Since making his senior debut in 2008, he has helped the Bavarian giants secure a staggering 33 trophies, including 12 Bundesliga titles and two UEFA Champions League crowns.
Reflecting on his journey, Muller expressed gratitude: “It’s been an incredible journey, shaped by unique experiences, great encounters, and unforgettable triumphs. This club and its fans have given me everything, and I’ve given everything back. Together, we’ve won it all.”
The 2014 World Cup winner, who scored 45 goals in 131 appearances for Germany, also emphasized his desire to leave on a high note: “What I want as a farewell should be clear—titles we can celebrate together. We’ll give our all in the coming weeks to bring the league title back to Munich.”
Despite his legendary status, Muller’s role has diminished this season. He has featured 24 times in the Bundesliga but started only eight matches, scoring once.
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen called him “one of the greatest player personalities this club has produced” and stressed the importance of reaching an amicable decision.
Tributes poured in from across the footballing world, including from England and Bayern striker Harry Kane, who described Muller as “the definition of a legend” and vowed to make the farewell season memorable.
Bayern plans to honor Muller’s departure with a testimonial, and his final competitive appearance could come at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States starting June 15.
