Uganda Cranes forward Steven Mukwala played a crucial role in Simba SC’s dramatic comeback against Egypt’s Al Masry, helping the Tanzanian side secure a spot in the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup on Tuesday night.
Simba entered the second leg at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam needing to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
With pressure mounting, it was Mukwala who stepped up in a pivotal moment, scoring the second goal of the night to level the aggregate at 2-2 and breathe life into Simba’s campaign.
His 32nd-minute finish came just ten minutes after Elie Mpanzu had opened the scoring for the hosts, setting the tone for what would be an intense and emotionally charged contest.
Mukwala’s strike—a clinical effort inside the box—was a testament to his sharp instincts and composure under pressure, and gave Simba the momentum they needed to push for a decisive third.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Simba were unable to find the winner in regular or extra time, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.
The Tanzanian club held their nerve in the shootout, with Steven Mukwala one of those who scored from the spot but goalkeeper Camara was the hero of the day making two crucial saves to seal the win.
