The build-up to Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final against Lyon has taken an explosive turn, with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic branding Andre Onana as “one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.”
The Serbian veteran, now a Lyon player, fired back after Onana’s confident remarks comparing United to Lyon.
Onana, who joined Manchester United for £47.2 million in 2023, sparked controversy earlier in the week when he described his team as being “way better” than their French opponents.
The Cameroonian shot-stopper later clarified his comments on social media, insisting he did not intend any disrespect.
“We know tomorrow will be a tough game against a strong opponent. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same,” Onana wrote on X.
However, Matic, who left Manchester United in 2022 after a five-year stint, did not hold back. “If it was Van der Sar, Schmeichel, or De Gea saying that, I’d question myself,” the 36-year-old said during a press conference.
“But when it’s someone who hasn’t cemented themselves as one of the greats, they need to tread carefully.”
Despite the personal jabs, Onana remains focused on redeeming a lackluster season for Manchester United.
With the Red Devils sitting a disappointing 13th in the Premier League, the Europa League represents their last shot at silverware. For Onana, who has kept 23 clean sheets in 93 appearances since joining, the Lyon tie is a chance to shift the narrative.
Matic’s remarks, meanwhile, highlight the ongoing debate over Onana’s impact at Old Trafford. Tasked with replacing David De Gea, a club icon with 190 clean sheets and multiple accolades, Onana has faced scrutiny for his performances.
Though his transfer fee ranks as the fourth-highest for a goalkeeper, critics argue he has yet to justify the investment.
United manager Ruben Amorim will hope to put the off-field drama aside as his team takes to the pitch in Lyon.
