Eric Cantona criticizes Jim Ratcliffe’s impact on Manchester United

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has launched a scathing critique of the club’s co-ownership under Sir Jim Ratcliffe, claiming that the 20-time English champions are “being destroyed.”

Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group acquired a 27.7% stake in United for £1.25bn in February 2024, taking control of football operations while the Glazer family retained majority ownership.

Cantona, speaking at an event at non-league FC United—a fan-founded club created in response to the Glazer takeover—shared his disapproval of Ratcliffe’s leadership approach.

“Since Ratcliffe arrived, this team of directors tries to destroy everything and they don’t respect anybody,” said Cantona, who made 185 appearances for United between 1992 and 1997.

The former France international expressed dismay over the club’s current direction, which includes plans to replace Old Trafford with a £2bn, 100,000-seater stadium. “The stadium is iconic,” Cantona remarked.

“For me, Arsenal lost their soul when they left Highbury. Can you imagine Liverpool playing in another stadium than Anfield? It’s impossible. I don’t think United can play in another stadium than Old Trafford.”

Cantona also criticized the decision to raise ticket prices and make redundancies, moves aimed at improving finances but seen as alienating by fans.

Additionally, he questioned Ratcliffe’s plans to part ways with Sir Alex Ferguson, calling the former manager “more than a legend” and a vital part of the club’s spirit. “The soul of the team and the club is not in the players—it’s like a big family,” Cantona said, emphasizing respect for the club’s traditions and people.

As Cantona lamented the club’s struggles to “find its soul again,” United declined to comment on the matter.
