Fourth National Athletics Trials Return to Namboole as 2025 Season Gains Momentum

The fourth edition of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) National Trials is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, continuing the federation’s effort to scout, prepare and sharpen local talent ahead of international competitions.

This latest round of trials follows three successful events that have reignited national athletics at the refurbished Namboole stadium, which reopened to track and field in early 2025 for the first time since renovations began in 2019.

The first trials, held in February, were historic—marking 100 years of Ugandan athletics and the return of competitive action to Namboole’s world-class tartan track.

That event saw standout performances from top local athletes, including 2018 World Champion Halimah Nakaayi, and drew regional participation from Kenya and Tanzania.

The second trials, staged on March 15, attracted over 280 athletes and featured a full competition day, reinforcing Namboole’s position as a premier venue for national and regional athletics.

The third trials, held on March 29, featured a notable Uganda-Kenya faceoff in the 4x100m relays, with both men’s and women’s sprint squads battling it out.

Now, the fourth trials promise more intensity, with a robust competition programme starting at 9:30 AM and stretching through the day.

Key events include the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, and the 3000m steeplechase for men, alongside a full slate of field events such as shot put, long jump, javelin, discus, and triple jump.

The day will climax with the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays at 3:55 PM and 4:00 PM respectively, which will also serve as a qualification round for the World Athletics Relays Championship later on.

With each round, the trials have grown in stature and competitiveness, setting the stage for a strong national squad in upcoming international meets, including the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
