Following the sacking of Abdallah Mubiru on Thursday, Jackson Magera has been handed the reins at KCCA in an interim capacity—and his tenure kicks off this Saturday with a tough test against high-flying BUL at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
Magera, who was Mubiru’s assistant, conducted his first training session in charge on Friday as the Kasasiro Boys geared up for their first fixture in the post-Mubiru era.
“It’s BUL, and of course, it’s my first test in charge,” Magera told the club media in his pre-match interview.
“The key focus is rebuilding confidence after that disappointing result in Hoima.”
“I’ve worked with this group for a while, and I’m encouraged by how they’ve responded in training—they understand the task ahead and are showing great character.”
“We might have a few absentees, but we’re locked in on getting the win.”
Squad News and Key Absentees
Brian Jjara is suspended, while Mustapha Mujuzi and Umar Lutalo are sidelined with malaria. Etienne Katenga and Sadat Anaku are still on the recovery path.
However, there’s a potential boost as striker Derrick Nsibambi could be available after completing full training on Friday.
Magera’a Second Stint in the Hot Seat
This marks Magera’s second spell as KCCA’s interim head coach. He previously stepped in after the departure of Portuguese tactician Sérgio Traguil and his assistant Manuel Correira, who were dismissed in October 2023.
Mubiru then took over, but following the recent downturn in results, the club has turned once again to Magera.
The former Villa boss returned to KCCA at the start of the 2023/24 season after guiding the Jogoos to a spirited title chase in the previous campaign.
He also has strong roots in the club, having worked with the Junior Team and previously served as first-team assistant coach.
He now faces the task of steering KCCA to a respectable finish in the league while the board decides on the club’s long-term technical direction.
Tough Opposition & Poor Recent Record
The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw in Lugazi back in September 2024—KCCA’s third league match of the campaign.
Ashraf Mugume opened the scoring for KCCA before Jeremy Kirya equalized for BUL.
At the time, the Kasasiro Boys topped the table, but the tide has since shifted.
Heading into Saturday’s showdown, KCCA sit sixth on the log with 34 points, while BUL are third on 39 points, with both sides having played 22 matches.
History isn’t on KCCA’s side—they’ve failed to beat BUL in their last four meetings, with two defeats and two draws in that run.
Kikomeko’s Side Strengthened
BUL, managed by Abbey Kikomeko, are boosted by the return of Nicholas Mwere from suspension and Walter Ochora from injury—adding steel to a backline that has been solid all season.
As Magera takes charge, the pressure will be on to make an instant impact and possibly position himself for a longer stint at the helm.
His journey begins now—with BUL standing in the way.
