Real Madrid and Croatia icon Luka Modric is set to embark on his first venture into football ownership, taking a minority stake in Swansea City.
The 39-year-old midfielder joins Andy Coleman, Brett Cravatt, Nigel Morris, and Jason Cohen in the Championship club’s ownership group, which acquired the shares of former majority owners Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan last November.
Modric’s involvement comes as Swansea look to navigate financial challenges, having posted a pre-tax loss of £15.2 million for the year ending June 2024—a reduction from the £17.9 million loss in the previous year.
Despite the setbacks, the club remains focused on operational efficiencies and reinvesting into the first-team squad, as outlined in a statement accompanying their annual financial figures.
For Modric, this marks an exciting new chapter alongside his playing career at Real Madrid, where he remains under contract until the end of the 2024-25 season.
The move underscores his vision to step into football ownership while continuing to thrive as a player at the highest level.
Swansea’s financial challenges reflect the competitive demands of the EFL Championship, with stadium and training facility costs growing amid the absence of a redistribution agreement with the Premier League. The club is expected to rely on its ownership group’s support to maintain stability and ambition.
