TY Omujuma (Ntare School Class of 2009-2014) secured their maiden Ntare Lions League title in dramatic fashion over the weekend, defeating SC Kalele 1-0 in a tense final played at St Leo’s College Kyegobe playground in Fort Portal.
The victory, sealed by a last-minute strike, marked a moment of redemption for TY Omujuma, who had reached the final in the previous two editions but fell short on both occasions. Team captain Brian Paul Mugerwa hailed the triumph as a significant milestone for the team, describing it as a long-awaited achievement.
“We won against our biggest rivals in the league having been the most consistent team in the league. It has been a long time coming and we are very deserving champions having also swept the individual accolades,” Mugerwa said after the match.
The Season 15 finale of the country’s oldest Sunday soccer league attracted a large crowd, including fans, alumni, and dignitaries. The event featured a variety of activities including rugby, golf, marathon, and cricket, creating a carnival atmosphere. The King of Tooro, HRH Dr Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV, graced the occasion as chief guest.
The final was a repeat of last year’s showdown, once again pitting TY Omujuma against SC Kalele, and once again delivering a closely fought contest. This time, however, TY Omujuma prevailed to claim their first title.
The team dedicated the victory to Allan Ategyeka, a devoted fan who passed away late last year.
“He was our biggest cheerleader and always supported the team, leading from the front like he did in Jinja and Kigali. Our spirits are high and we remember,” Mugerwa added.
Forward Phillip Kagwisage was a standout performer throughout the season, finishing as the league’s Most Valuable Player, top scorer, and best playmaker – a clean sweep of individual honours that underlined TY Omujuma’s dominance this season.
