After finishing eighth at the 2021 Men’s Africa Club Championship, Nemostars will be aiming for an improved performance at this year’s edition of the continental tournament.
The championship, set to run from April 17 to 30 in Misrata, Libya, will feature 32 clubs. Egyptian giants Al Ahly will be looking to defend their title.
Following several weeks of intensive training at the Lugogo Indoor Arena, the Tom Paul Amou-coached side is ready to compete against some of the continent’s top volleyball clubs.
Team captain George Aporu, a long-serving member of the squad, expressed confidence in the team’s readiness.
“Over the years, the team has grown in performance, and we’re hoping to continue that improvement,” Aporu stated.
Nemostars, six-time national league champions, will field a mix of young and experienced players, with the tournament also serving as a platform to expose emerging talent. The team has been bolstered by the addition of two new players and will also welcome back international star Daudi Okello.
“The team is looking good. We’ve trained well, and two new players have joined us. Daudi Okello will also be part of the squad, which will strengthen our chances,” Okello noted.
The team was officially flagged off by National Council of Sports officer Ann Nankya, who encouraged them to deliver a competitive performance against Africa’s best.
The 10-man squad includes: George Aporu, Mark Omara, Bernard Malinga, Steven Wandera, Daudi Okello, Smith Okumu, John Bosco Opendi, Brian Musinguzi, Esau Ecilz, and Willington Talemwa.
Nemostars’ best performance at the Africa Club Championship came in 2019, when they finished sixth in Egypt. They have been regular participants in the tournament since 2013.
