Quality High School Buikwe and Mukono Kings Secondary School emerged champions in the boys’ and girls’ categories respectively at the 2025 USSSA Mukono Zone Football Championships.
The tournament concluded on Sunday, April 13, at the St Kalemba SS grounds, with hundreds in attendance, including USSSA third vice president Harriet Margaret Apolot and Kayunga district sports officer Christopher Kibirige.
Quality High School Buikwe sealed a 1-0 victory over St Julian High School in the boys’ final, courtesy of an early second-minute strike from Hirodi Koma Lazze.
Head coach Peter Sserumaga hailed the commitment of his squad, stating: “We commenced the preparations early. The players played like gallant soldiers with great determination.”
Sserumaga’s side, now celebrating their first-ever zonal trophy, had a chance to double their lead within five minutes, but St Julian’s goalkeeper Harunah Brighton saved a penalty taken by Marvin Rwothomio.
In the girls’ final, Mukono Kings edged Lugazi Homestone School 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.
Nabillah Nawoma, Aidah Namuwonge, Valencia Nagayi, and Shanitah Nakakooza converted their spot-kicks for Mukono Kings, while Lugazi Homestone’s Ritah Kadondi and Victoria Nabbona missed crucial penalties.
Speaking after the match, Apolot congratulated all the teams that participated and encouraged the victorious sides to maintain discipline and intensify training ahead of the national championships in Ngora.
Kayunga district sports officer Christopher Kibirige, who inspected the teams before kick-off, emphasized the broader benefits of school sports.
“Sports not only promote good health but also build confidence, teach how to manage success and failure, and provide opportunities for employment and travel,” Kibirige said.
Alongside Quality High School Buikwe and Mukono Kings, Namagabi SS, Lugazi Homestone, and Mehta SS have also qualified to represent Mukono zone at the upcoming nationals.
Basketball qualifiers for the Mukono zone are set to take place at St Mary’s College Lugazi on the weekend of April 18-19.
