Ugandan forward Steven Mukwala delivered a standout performance as Simba SC edged Stellenbosch FC 1-0 in the first leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup semi-final in Zanzibar on Sunday.
Although it was Jean Ahoua’s well-taken free-kick just before half-time that separated the sides at the Amaan Stadium, Mukwala’s impact was felt throughout a tense contest.
The striker’s intelligent movement and link-up play created consistent problems for the Stellenbosch defence and helped Simba dominate possession during key stretches of the match.
Mukwala, who joined Simba in 2023, was instrumental in stretching the South African backline, opening up space for Simba’s attacking fullbacks and midfield runners.
While he didn’t get on the scoresheet, his off-the-ball work contributed to multiple goal-scoring opportunities, including efforts from Elie Mpanzu that forced fine saves from Stellenbosch goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke.
Simba’s dominance in the first half culminated in Ahoua’s decisive strike, which came after VAR intervened to award a free-kick just outside the box. The Ivorian defender made no mistake, drilling his shot low into the bottom corner.
Stellenbosch, playing in their first-ever CAF competition semi-final, battled hard but struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Their best opportunity came in the 27th minute when Devin Titus’ powerful header was well-saved by Ally Salim. Substitute Fawaaz Basadien also went close in stoppage time but fired wide.
The second half saw limited rhythm due to a series of stoppages and substitutions, but Mukwala continued to press and hassle the visiting defenders, playing a key role in ensuring Simba held their lead.
With the return leg set for South Africa, Mukwala and Simba know the tie remains finely balanced. However, their narrow win and clean sheet at home provide a crucial platform as they seek a place in the Confederation Cup final.
