CAF CL: Sundowns, Pirates Head to Cairo Needing Goals to Reach Final

South Africa’s hopes of continental glory hang in the balance as Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates prepare for high-stakes second-leg clashes in Cairo, following goalless draws in their respective CAF Champions League semi-final home fixtures.

In Pretoria, Sundowns were frustrated by Al Ahly in a cagey 0-0 stalemate. Despite enjoying greater possession and dictating much of the tempo, the hosts found it difficult to break down a disciplined Al Ahly defense.

A bright spot for Sundowns was the return of captain Themba Zwane, who made his first appearance since recovering from a long-term injury. His leadership and attacking instincts will be key as the team travels to Egypt needing a result to reach the final.

Orlando Pirates endured a similarly tense affair in Johannesburg, settling for a 0-0 draw against a determined Pyramids FC side at the FNB Stadium.

The Buccaneers, known for their enterprising play throughout the tournament, were unable to convert their chances into goals.

Head coach José Riveiro, however, expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to deliver under pressure. “We’ve shown time and again that we can compete at this level. We go to Cairo with belief,” he said.

The path to the final now leads through Egypt, where both Al Ahly and Pyramids FC boast strong home records and passionate support.

Al Ahly, ten-time champions of the competition, will look to draw on their vast experience, while Pyramids FC, still in search of their first title, continue to benefit from robust investment and growing ambition.

The decisive second legs will take place this weekend, with Sundowns and Pirates both needing at least a score draw to advance.
