Makmot Ivan: “We’ll Come Back Stronger”

Victoria Sharks head coach Makmot Ivan has described the team’s debut season in the Uganda Rugby Premiership as one of “growth and learning,” expressing pride in what his players have achieved and optimism about the future.

In an interview with NBS Sport, Ivan acknowledged the difficulties faced by the team, which is backed by Victoria University, as they made their first appearance in the top flight of Ugandan rugby.

“This season was about growth and learning,” Ivan said. “I’m grateful to the management of Victoria University for the constant support, and to the players for their heart and fight. We are not stopping here — next season, we will come back stronger and push even further.”

The Sharks ended their maiden campaign with six wins, two draws, and seven losses across 13 matches.

That record was enough to earn them a spot in the Uganda Rugby Premiership playoffs — an impressive milestone for a new side.

Though their journey ended in the playoffs with a loss to the experienced Heathens, Ivan framed the season as a strong foundation for future progress.

With the Sharks now out, attention shifts to the semifinals.

The Heathens are set to take on the Pirates on Friday, while the Jinja Hippos face off against the Kobs in the other semifinal, with both matches set to be broadcast live on NBS Sport.
