Arena Slams Pochettino Appointment, Questions Understanding of US Soccer Culture

Former United States men’s national team head coach Bruce Arena has ignited a debate over the appointment of Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, asserting that foreign managers lack the fundamental understanding required for the crucial role.

Pochettino, the former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea boss, took the reins of the US team in September 2024, succeeding American Gregg Berhalter.

Speaking on the “Unfiltered Soccer” podcast alongside former US internationals Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, Arena didn’t mince his words. “You know if you look at every national team in the world, the coach is usually a domestic coach,” he stated.

“And I think when you have coaches that don’t know our culture, our environment, our players, it’s hard. I’m sure our coach is a very good coach, but coaching international football is different than club football, it’s a completely different job.”

Arena, who famously guided the USA to their best modern-era World Cup finish with a quarterfinal appearance in 2002, but also oversaw the disastrous failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup during his second stint, currently coaches the San Jose Earthquakes.

He suggested that Pochettino’s international background prevents him from grasping the unique dynamics of the US national team.

“I think when you’re a national team coach, you need to know your environment, you need to know the animals you coach, and we’re lacking that,” Arena declared. “If you’re an American coaching the US team, you know the culture, you know the pride and how important the national team is. I think when you bring in somebody from the outside, they don’t understand it, especially in our country, because we’re so different.”

Arena’s comments come on the heels of his own recent controversy, having departed the New England Revolution in 2023 after being placed on administrative leave following allegations of “insensitive and inappropriate remarks.”

Despite this, his experience in the American game, including five MLS Cup victories, lends weight to his opinions. He has a history of critiquing foreign appointments, having previously voiced concerns over Jurgen Klinsmann’s tenure as US coach.

The veteran coach also expressed his dismay at the US team’s recent performances in the CONCACAF Nations League, where they suffered defeats to Panama and Canada last month.

“I’m watching and I’m shocked. I’m shocked that we can’t beat Panama and Canada. It was shocking to me,” Arena admitted.

Despite his strong criticism, Arena maintained a desire for the team’s success as they prepare to co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.

“I don’t want to be disrespectful. I want them to do great in the World Cup, there’s no question about it. But we only have a year left now. Time is running out, and they got to get going,” he concluded.
