Stanbic Black Pirates have a slim five-point advantage over rivals Platinum Credit Heathens after the first leg of the 2025 men’s Uganda Rugby Premiership playoffs semifinals.
Pirates beat Heathens, 17-12, in the tightly-contested match at a surprisingly packed Kyadondo Rugby Club on Friday evening.
The Sea Robbers were led by their captain Frank Kidega who not only scored a try but was also significantly involved in attack and defence. Kidega’s exploits, including a barnstorming carry which broke four attempted tackles, earned him the Man of the Match award.
The other points were scored by Timothy Kisiga (try) and William Nkore (two conversions and a penalty).
Despite being under the pump for extended periods, Heathens defended valiantly in front of their home fans.
The Yellow Machine kept Pirates within touching distance courtesy of two tries by Nicholas Kato & Shadon Munoko and one Malcolm Okello conversion.
On an evening with some gusts of wind, the kickers from both teams were on point in open play but they struggled off the tee. Ivan Magomu and Nkore of Pirates missed four penalties (12 points) while Aaron Ofoyrwoth and Okello of Heathens missed just one penalty and one conversion (5 points).
Ultimately, ahead of the second leg next Saturday at Kings Park, the score difference is now just one try in favour of Pirates.
The other semifinal is between KCB KOBs and Jinja Hippos.
