BUL Eye Momentum in Jinja Road Derby Clash Against Lugazi

BUL will be aiming to maintain their strong run of form in the second round of the Uganda Premier League when they host Lugazi at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru on Tuesday.

The fixture, dubbed the Jinja Road Derby, pits the cooking oil manufacturers against the sugarcane growers in what is expected to be a fiercely contested encounter.

Fresh from a hard-fought 2-1 away victory over Wakiso Giants, BUL will be eager to extend their unbeaten run in the second round, where they have won eight and drawn two of their ten matches.

A win for the Jinja-based side would see them retain third place on the log with 49 points.

Lugazi, meanwhile, are coming into the tie buoyed by a spirited comeback win over Soltilo Bright Stars, overturning a one-goal deficit to seal a 3-1 victory at home.

Should they upset BUL on the road, and results elsewhere go their way—specifically losses for Express and UPDF—the debutants could rise to ninth place with 34 points.

In terms of team news, BUL continue to grapple with key absences. Suspended duo Walter Ochora and Nicholas Mwere will sit out the clash alongside head coach Abbey Kikomeko.

While Karim Ndugwa, George Kasonko, and Pascal Ngobi have returned from injury, they are yet to regain full fitness and remain sidelined. Forward Martin Aprem also remains unavailable.

Lugazi will be without Abdul Kalanzi, who missed the Bright Stars game due to a training injury, as well as Paul Wasswa and Shafiq Avemah, both nursing knocks.

However, the visitors are boosted by the return of Sharif Saaka and Sam Ssemugugu from injury and illness, respectively.

This will be only the second meeting between the two sides. BUL edged the reverse fixture in January with a dramatic 2-1 win at Lugazi Stadium, thanks to Isaac Wagoina’s injury-time strike in the 92nd minute.

BUL’s home form in the second round has been formidable—winning four of their five matches, scoring in four of those and keeping four clean sheets. They have conceded only once at home in that stretch, a goal from URA.

Lugazi, on the other hand, have struggled on the road in the second round, registering just one win in four outings. All three of their away goals came in a single match against Mbale Heroes, and they have managed just one clean sheet, against Kitara.

With both teams having something to fight for—BUL in pursuit of a top-three finish and Lugazi aiming to climb further away from the relegation zone—the stage is set for a compelling derby on Jinja Road.
