Boca Juniors have dismissed coach Fernando Gago following their weekend defeat to archrivals River Plate.
“Fernando Gago has reached the end of the road,” confirmed club director Mauricio Serna. He admitted it was a “calm but not easy” decision for the Buenos Aires side.
Gago, a former Boca player appointed last October, leaves with a record of 17 wins, six draws, and seven losses. His job was already in jeopardy after a Copa Libertadores exit in February.
Serna acknowledged Gago’s strong ties to the club, saying, “It wasn’t easy, he’s one of us but that’s what we are here for, to make decisions.”
Boca Juniors will have a new coach before their Club World Cup trip to the United States in June.
