Mbale Heroes’ return to the Uganda Premier League has officially ended in heartbreak, as the club became the first team to be relegated from the 2024/25 season following a 1-0 home defeat to Maroons FC on Wednesday.
After a turbulent campaign both on and off the pitch, the Heroes went into the clash at Mbale Municipal Stadium with their backs firmly against the wall. It was a must-win fixture—a last-ditch effort to delay what had begun to feel inevitable.
But it was Norman Odipio’s 27th-minute strike that proved the fatal blow, handing Maroons all three points and sealing Mbale Heroes’ drop to the FUFA Big League with four matches still to play.
Mathematically Done and Dusted
Rooted to the bottom of the table, Mbale Heroes’ maximum possible points tally is now 26, assuming they win all their remaining four games.
But with Mbarara City, currently 13th on 23 points, already 13 points ahead, survival is no longer a mathematical possibility.
It’s a crushing end for the Eastern Uganda side, who were only promoted to the top tier this season after an 18-year absence. Their long-awaited return has lasted just one campaign.
Two More Relegation Spots Up for Grabs
With the Heroes’ fate now sealed, attention shifts to the remaining relegation battle. Wakiso Giants (14th with 20 points)and Soltilo Bright Stars (15th with 16 points) are the two teams currently in the red zone, and both were in action on Wednesday.
Bright Stars fell 1-0 to Express FC, further deepening their troubles.
Wakiso Giants held Kitara to a goalless draw in Hoima, a vital point that may prove valuable in the run-in.
The Battle Continues on May 7
The relegation fight is far from over, and it could be shaped significantly on May 7:
Wakiso Giants host Mbarara City in a classic relegation six-pointer.
Bright Stars travel to UPDF, who are also not yet mathematically safe.
As for Mbale Heroes, the focus now shifts to rebuilding and regrouping ahead of their return to the FUFA Big League, hoping that the next chapter won’t take another two decades to bring them back to top-flight football.
