Mbale Heroes Relegated from the Uganda Premier League

Mbale Heroes have officially been relegated from the Uganda Premier League (UPL), marking a disappointing end to their much-anticipated return to the top flight after nearly two decades in the lower divisions.

The confirmation came on Wednesday evening at the Mbale Municipal Stadium, where the Surgeons fell 1-0 to Maroons.

Norman Odipio’s 27th-minute strike condemned the home side to their 20th loss of the campaign, a result that mathematically sealed their fate with four matches left in the season.

With just 10 points from 26 games; 13 behind 13th-placed Mbarara City, Mbale Heroes can no longer escape the relegation zone, even if they win all their remaining fixtures and Mbarara lose theirs.

The result brings an end to a troubled campaign that has seen the club struggle both on and off the pitch.

The 2024/25 season was supposed to be a fairytale return for the Eastern Uganda side, who had earned promotion back to the UPL last May after finishing third in the FUFA Big League.

They were promoted alongside champions Police and Lugazi, both of whom currently sit comfortably above the drop zone in 12th and 11th places respectively.

However, Mbale Heroes’ return quickly turned sour. The team has managed just two wins, including a memorable 1-0 home victory over defending champions SC Villa on Matchday 2, and picked up only four draws.

Internal turmoil added to their woes, with the club parting ways with promotion-winning coach Richard Malinga early in the season.

His replacement, Asaph Mwebaze, faced resistance from both fans and players, leading to his dismissal in January following a 28-day suspension for indiscipline.

Baker Mbowa took over the reins, but the damage had already been done.

The relegation ends a difficult chapter for a club with a proud history. Mbale Heroes last played in the UPL in 2005, having previously spent over a decade in the top division and famously winning the Kakungulu Cup (now the Stanbic Uganda Cup) in 1999.

Their initial rise to the top flight came in 1994, but their long-awaited return has now ended in heartbreak.
