Uganda will welcome World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and Vice President Lt. Gen. Jackson Tuwei as part of the Uganda Athletics Federation’s (UAF) centenary celebrations, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s sporting history.
The UAF is commemorating 100 years of organized athletics in Uganda with a series of high-profile events throughout the year.
Central to these celebrations is the Akii-Bua Memorial Athletics Championship, scheduled for June 8th at the refurbished Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
This competition honors John Akii-Bua, Uganda’s first Olympic gold medalist who won the 400m hurdles at the 1972 Munich Games. Lt. Gen. Tuwei is expected to play a leading role in this tribute event.
Later in the year, following the World Athletics Road Running Championships and engagements in Tokyo, Uganda will host another major gathering in November.
This will include an awards dinner presided over by President Coe, where the UAF will recognize the contributions of top-performing athletes, coaches, officials, and key stakeholders who have been instrumental to the growth of athletics in Uganda.
