Dr. Joseph Ssekandi has been named Sports Tutor of the Decade at the recently concluded University Football League (UFL) awards ceremony, a recognition that celebrates his enduring contribution to sports education and youth development.
Born and raised in Nkozi, Mpigi District, Dr. Ssekandi’s journey to national acclaim is a story of persistence and passion.
After completing high school, financial hardships saw him take up a job as a gatekeeper. Undeterred, he continued to pursue his education, eventually earning a doctorate in Agriculture—a testament to his resilience.
His appointment as sports tutor at Uganda Martyrs University marked the beginning of a transformative period for the institution’s football program.
During his tenure, Ssekandi guided the university to its first UFL trophy and laid a solid foundation that has since led to continued success.
That legacy bore further fruit last weekend when Uganda Martyrs secured their third UFL title, beating St. Lawrence University 3-0 in the 2025 final held at Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.
Beyond the university pitch, Dr. Ssekandi has remained deeply connected to his roots, playing a vital role in scouting and mentoring young footballers from his hometown of Nkozi.
His efforts have seen many of these players rise through the ranks to join top-tier clubs in Uganda.
Dr. Ssekandi’s path to higher education was made possible by a benefactor who supported his studies. That support has helped elevate him to the position of respected lecturer and leader in sports development.
Dr. Ssekandi’s recognition as Sports Tutor of the Decade not only honors his achievements but also underscores the impact of committed mentorship in Ugandan football and education.
