Xabi Alonso sidestepped questions about potentially succeeding Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, stating “nothing new to say” ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s crucial Bundesliga match against Freiburg.
Spanish media have identified Alonso as a frontrunner for the Real Madrid job if Ancelotti departs.
Alonso, who previously starred for Real Madrid under Ancelotti, emphasized his positive relationship with Leverkusen, despite the ongoing speculation. “Communication with the club is still good. There is clarity between everyone,” he said.
Despite not replicating their historic unbeaten title-winning season, Alonso highlighted Leverkusen’s strong performance, calling it the “second-best season in the club’s history.”
He anticipates a tough challenge against Champions League-chasing Freiburg.
Leverkusen might be without key forward Victor Boniface due to a thigh issue.
Alonso acknowledged Freiburg’s high motivation but stressed his team is equally determined. The remaining league games see Leverkusen face three teams vying for European spots.
