Two-time national rally champion Susan “Super Lady” Muwonge has announced her return to competitive motorsport, confirming her participation in the 2024 Africa Rally Championship (ARC), starting with the Pearl of Africa Rally in Western Uganda from May 8–11.
Muwonge, a trailblazer in Ugandan motorsport with national titles in 2011 and 2018, is entering the ARC2 category—an entry-level class in the continental rally scene. Her return marks the end of a nearly five-year hiatus from active competition.
“I felt it was time to try something new,” Muwonge said. “ARC2 gives me that fresh adventure I’ve always dreamed of.”
The Pearl of Africa Rally, the second round of the ARC series, will feature a competitive field that includes Tanzania’s Prince Charles Nyerere, Uganda’s Michael Mukula and Moustapha Mukasa, as well as Kenya’s Hamza Anwar and Issa Amwari.
Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Muwonge noted the difficulty of rejoining at a high level after years away. “I know I won’t be at the top of my game right away, especially in Mbarara, but I’ll take it stage by stage. The goal is a strong, respectable finish.”
In another major shift, Muwonge will compete without her longtime co-driver Edmond Kyeyune. Instead, she will team up with Musa Nsubuga for the first time.
The rally will begin on May 8 with the qualifying stage and shakedown, followed by three competitive stages on May 9, including the Super Special Stage at Rukaari Resort.
