Rodell Gaita Wins Deo Akope Challenge with Record Score as Juniors Shine in Entebbe

Rodell Gaita emerged as the standout performer at the second edition of the Deo Akope Challenge, clinching victory with a final score of six under par (-6) at Entebbe Golf Club.

His dominant display across the three-day event marked his second win at the course in just seven months.

“I think the course loves me, we love each other,” Gaita said after his win. “My ultimate goal is to golf beyond Uganda. I played the course all under par during the three-day period.”

Gaita’s consistent performance saw him finish ahead of defending champion David Kamulindwa and Davis Kato, who tied for second with scores of four under par (-4).

Grace Kasango claimed fourth place at three under (-3), while Fred Wanzala and Marvin Kibirige shared fifth with two under par (-2).

Tournament founder Deo Akope praised the standard of play, calling Gaita’s score the best seen in the event’s history.

“For the first time since this tournament started, this is the best score we have seen — it may be even better than the Uganda Open,” Akope said.

“This says a lot for the professionals. With more tournaments like these, they will continue to improve and be ready for bigger competitions.”

Beyond the professional category, the tournament also spotlighted emerging junior talent. Nasaaba Calvin Jeremiah impressed in the junior division, finishing with a gross score of 93 and a net score of 66 to take top honours.

“It means a lot to me to participate in this tournament. It gives me exposure and more experience,” Nasaaba said.

Akope emphasized the importance of youth participation, stating, “This tournament is not only focused on the professionals — we also had the juniors. At the end of the day, it will be them to replace and take over the game.”
