Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has brushed aside Arsene Wenger’s suggestion that Europa League winners shouldn’t automatically qualify for the Champions League, quipping, “Spurs does crazy things to people.”
Speaking before Tottenham’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Bodo/Glimt, Postecoglou responded to Wenger’s questioning of the current UEFA rule.
Despite Tottenham’s 3-1 lead in the tie, their lowly 16th Premier League position means the Europa League offers their most likely route to Champions League football.
Postecoglou questioned the timing of Wenger’s comments and the inconsistency of qualification rules. “Why wasn’t it an issue before and is it an issue now?” he asked.
Wenger had told beIN Sports that Europa League winners should only qualify for the Europa League again, especially with five Premier League teams potentially reaching the Champions League.
Tottenham will face Bodo/Glimt without the injured James Maddison but have Dominic Solanke available.
