Former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango delivered a solid performance between the posts to help Mamelodi Sundowns secure a commanding 3-0 win over Chippa United on Wednesday night, restoring their 12-point lead at the top of the Betway Premiership table.
Onyango was one of four changes made from the side that defeated Cape Town City, coming in alongside Malibongwe Khoza, Khuliso Mudau, and Jayden Adams.
The veteran goalkeeper was tested early in the match, notably rushing off his line to block a dangerous cross-shot from Craig Martin.
While his side dominated proceedings, Onyango remained alert, pulling off a crucial save in the second half to deny Sinoxolo Kwayiba’s header from close range, preserving his clean sheet on the night.
Sundowns took control of the match in the 29th minute when Iqraam Rayners finished off a low delivery from Mudau.
Jayden Adams doubled the lead just before halftime after capitalizing on a goalkeeping error from Stanley Nwabali.
Despite a spirited start to the second half by Chippa, Onyango’s composure at the back ensured there was no way through.
The defending champions eventually sealed the win with a third goal ten minutes from time, as substitute Thapelo Maseko slotted home from a Sales cross.
Sundowns’ victory brings them closer to yet another league title, with Onyango’s experience and leadership proving vital in a high-pressure title chase.
