Uganda’s 4x400m mixed relay team departed for Guangzhou, China on Wednesday, May 8, ahead of their debut appearance at the World Athletics Relays scheduled for May 10–11, 2025.
This historic moment marks the first time the country will be represented in the mixed relay category at the global event.
The team, comprising Adoli Haron, Chan Wengo Godfrey, Shida Leni, and Maureen Akiiki Banura, will compete among 32 nations, all vying for podium finishes and automatic qualification slots for the World Athletics Championships set to take place in Tokyo this September.
The World Relays, now in its seventh edition, is being hosted in China for the first time.
Uganda’s participation signals a growing investment in sprint events and a significant expansion of the country’s traditional strengths in long-distance running.
Uganda Athletics Federation President Dominic Otuchet earlier described the qualification as a “dream come true” given that this is the year the federation is having their 100-year anniversary celebrations.
With the competition just days away, Uganda’s sprinters are focused on delivering a strong performance and finishing among the top eight—securing not just pride, but a ticket to Tokyo.
