The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has dismissed circulating claims questioning the age and eligibility of St. Mary’s Boarding Secondary School, Kitende footballer, Santos Manyiel Marial, terming the allegations as false and misleading.
Concerns emerged on social and mainstream media following Marial’s participation in the 2025 USSSA National Football Championship, with some alleging he is only 14 years old.
The association clarified on Friday that Marial was born on August 20, 2005, making him 19 years old and turning 20 later this year—within the eligibility window for USSSA-sanctioned competitions.
“His date of birth is officially verified in his Student’s Pass, a visa document issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs,” USSSA said in a press release dated May 16.
The association emphasized that this document is mandatory for all international students participating in school sports events under its jurisdiction.
The statement further noted that 2025 marks Marial’s final year of eligibility for school competitions. USSSA also reassured the public of its stringent verification measures, particularly for international students, to ensure full compliance with competition rules.
“We are deeply disappointed by the false accusations targeting this student and his school,” said Justus Mugisha, President of USSSA. “Such unfounded claims not only harm the reputation of the individual involved but also threaten the integrity of school sports in Uganda.”
USSSA condemned the spread of unverified information and warned that those found responsible for spreading misinformation may be held accountable for reputational or legal consequences.
The association called for responsible reporting, particularly in matters involving minors and educational institutions.
