Uganda’s campaign at the 2025 FIBA U16 AfroBasket started on a tough note after falling 57-50 to Cameroon in Kigali on Tuesday.
The young Silverbacks matched their opponents in a competitive first quarter, with Joshua Bwakanda scoring six points and Shammah Kwizera adding five to keep Uganda within reach at 18-15.
But Cameroon stepped up in the second period, outscoring Uganda 17-7 to take a 13-point halftime lead.
Uganda fought back in the second half and managed to keep the game close, with Bwakanda finishing with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Pierre Laurent Rwihiriro also registered 11 points and 11 rebounds in an encouraging performance.
Despite the loss, Uganda’s physical presence under the boards was clear, though turnovers and missed chances at key moments made the difference.
The result leaves Uganda needing victory against Tunisia on Friday to stay in contention for a place in the knockout rounds.
Elsewhere on opening day, Angola beat hosts Rwanda 67-56 in overtime to close out a dramatic start to the tournament.
Uganda will return to action on Friday against Tunisia at 5 PM East African Time.
