The Uganda Table Tennis Association has confirmed plans to stage its regional championship at the Hoima City Stadium indoor arena in May, becoming one of the first indoor sports bodies to make use of the newly opened facility.
Hoima City Stadium was officially commissioned last month by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as part of the government’s wider investment in sports infrastructure aimed at decentralising talent development. The venue is also set to host matches during the Pamoja 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Uganda will co host with Kenya and Tanzania.
The National Council of Sports General Secretary, Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel, has encouraged federations to take advantage of the facility, saying the time is right to spread sports development beyond the capital.
“This is the right time for sports federations and associations to utilise such facilities. The government has invested heavily to ensure sports development reaches all regions,” Dr Ogwel said.
UTTA President Cyrus Muwanga said the association views Hoima as more than a one off destination, revealing ambitions to elevate the venue onto the continental stage. “We intend to hold our regional championship here, and next year we shall bid to host the Africa Senior Table Tennis Championship from the Hoima City Indoor Arena,” Muwanga stated.
He added that UTTA has a packed activity calendar for 2026, including the revival of schools competitions, regional championships and the Uganda Open, all geared towards growing the sport across the country.
Hoima City Stadium is a multi purpose complex capable of hosting both indoor and outdoor sports. Its early adoption by table tennis underlines the venue’s rising profile and signals Hoima City’s emergence as a new centre for national and international sporting events.
