FIFA President Slams Alleged Racism Towards Vinícius Júnior in Champions League Clash

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has condemned the alleged racial abuse aimed at Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior during a UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid and Benfica on Tuesday.

In a game that will be remembered for the wrong reasons, Vinícius accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of calling him a “monkey” in the heat of the match. The Brazilian forward, who went on to score the only goal, led his team to victory, but the event was overshadowed by the disturbing allegation of racism. The game was paused for around 10 minutes while officials addressed the situation, but the emotional weight of the incident remained as the match resumed.

Reacting swiftly, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his shock and sadness over the incident, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in football, or in society. He called for a thorough investigation into the matter and made it clear that FIFA will not tolerate any form of racism: “Racism has no place in football or in our communities. We need everyone involved to take action and hold those responsible accountable.”

Infantino also praised referee François Letexier for immediately activating the anti-racism protocol by pausing the game and signaling with the arm gesture, an important gesture aimed at sending a clear message. This quick response is a sign that football’s governing bodies are increasingly committed to stamping out discrimination from the game.

In contrast, Prestianni and Benfica’s coach José Mourinho have both denied the allegations. Prestianni responded quickly to the accusations, rejecting the claims and stating that he would never make such a comment. Mourinho also voiced his disbelief, stressing that such behavior would not be tolerated at Benfica, a club built on respect.

Despite their denials, this incident adds to a worrying trend in Vinícius Júnior’s career. The 22-year-old has been a target of racial abuse on more than 20 separate occasions. These disturbing incidents have made Vinícius a central figure in the conversation around racism in football, and his ongoing fight against discrimination remains one of the most poignant narratives in modern football.

FIFA has long been vocal in its commitment to combatting racism through initiatives like the Global Stand Against Racism and the Players’ Voice Panel, but as Infantino’s statement underlined, there is still much work to be done. “At FIFA, we are committed to ensuring that players, officials, and fans are respected and protected,” Infantino stated, calling for all involved parties to take responsibility for eradicating racism from the sport.

As the investigation into the matter continues, the football world watches closely, hoping for a clear, decisive outcome. While Vinícius Júnior’s resilience in the face of racism is admirable, it’s clear that the fight is far from over.

This incident is just another painful reminder that racism continues to be a persistent issue in football. The question now is: How many more times will we have to witness such abuse before real change takes place? What steps can be taken to ensure that football, and society as a whole, becomes a place where everyone is truly equal, regardless of race?
