Ugandan Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai has staged a remarkable return to the track, turning a painful injury setback into renewed pursuit of greatness.
Chemutai’s career was rocked at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she struck a barrier in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final, suffering a twisted ankle that forced her into a long recovery. Rather than rushing back, she dedicated months to healing, rebuilding fitness, and sharpening her preparations.
Her patience paid off spectacularly. At the Shanghai Diamond League on May 16, 2026, Chemutai stormed to victory in a world-leading 8:51.47, setting a new meeting record. Just a week later, she reinforced her dominance at the Xiamen Diamond League on May 23, winning again in 8:51.06.
The back-to-back triumphs have signaled a powerful resurgence, reaffirming her place among the world’s elite steeplechasers. Uganda Athletics President Dominic Otucet hailed Chemutai as the nation’s standout performer for May, revealing that she has now shifted her focus to breaking the women’s 3000m steeplechase world record.
Chemutai’s comeback story is more than a return — it is a declaration of intent, as Uganda’s first female Olympic champion sets her sights on rewriting history.
