Uganda’s long-distance icon Joshua Cheptegei has thrown his weight behind Team Uganda as preparations intensify for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Speaking in Kapchorwa during an engagement with Her Excellency Lisa Chesney, Cheptegei expressed confidence that Uganda’s athletes have the ability to shine on the international stage and return home with strong results.
Reflecting on his own career-defining triumph at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, where he clinched double gold, Cheptegei described the achievement as a turning point that propelled him to global success, including world titles and Olympic medals.
Although he will not feature in Glasgow—having shifted focus alongside Jacob Kiplimo to road racing and marathon events—Cheptegei remains optimistic. He believes the new generation of Ugandan athletes is ready to rise to the challenge and carry the nation’s flag with pride.
The Games, scheduled for July 23 to August 2, will bring together athletes from across the Commonwealth. Team Uganda will be aiming to build on recent successes and deliver another memorable performance on the global stage in Scotland.
