Australia produced a memorable FIFA World Cup opening performance in Vancouver, defeating Turkey 2-0 to end a run of four consecutive defeats in their opening matches at the tournament.
Making his competitive debut between the posts, goalkeeper Patrick Beach delivered a sensational man-of-the-match display, producing a tournament-high eight saves to frustrate Turkey and provide the foundation for a famous Socceroos victory.
The match began with both sides struggling to create clear opportunities, although Turkey looked the more dangerous in the early stages.
Arda Guler came closest for the Crescent Stars after combining well with captain Orkun Kokcu, but the Real Madrid midfielder fired over the crossbar.
Ferdi Kadıoglu also missed the target before Barış Yılmaz delivered a dangerous ball into the box for Güler, whose first-time volley was comfortably gathered by Beach.
Australia had offered little attacking threat, but they punished Turkey with a moment of individual brilliance just before the half-hour mark.
Paul Okon-Engstler launched a long pass forward for Nestory Irankunda, and the Watford forward produced excellent skill and composure to beat the Turkish defence before firing a low strike beyond Uğurcan Çakır.
The goal created history, with Irankunda becoming the youngest Australian player to score at a World Cup finals.
Turkey searched for an immediate response, but their best effort before half-time came from a wild Kökçü attempt, while Çakır was forced into action again to deny Irankunda just before the break.
Determined to turn the game around, Turkey introduced star winger Kenan Yıldız at half-time after he was deemed unfit to start. The change brought renewed attacking energy, and Vincenzo Montella’s side immediately pushed Australia deeper.
A deflected İsmail Yüksek effort briefly threatened to wrong-foot Beach, but the ball drifted narrowly wide.
Australia almost doubled their lead at the other end when Harry Souttar rose unmarked from a corner, only for Çakır to make a crucial save.
The Socceroos from the Land Down Under continued to absorb pressure but remained dangerous on the counterattack. Jordan Bos nearly repeated Australia’s first-half heroics when he fired just over from a tight angle.
Then came another decisive moment from Beach. The goalkeeper produced a superb save to deny Zeki Celik from close range, keeping Australia in front before his team delivered the knockout blow.
In the 75th minute, Connor Metcalfe collected possession outside the area, drove forward and unleashed a powerful low strike into the bottom corner to give Australia a commanding two-goal advantage.
Turkey refused to give up, but Beach appeared unbeatable. The debutant goalkeeper denied Kerem Akturkoglu with an outstanding point-blank save shortly after Metcalfe’s goal, ensuring Australia maintained their clean sheet.
The final whistle confirmed a significant victory for Tony Popovic’s side, who combined defensive resilience with moments of attacking quality to begin their World Cup journey in perfect fashion.
For Turkey, the defeat marked a disappointing return to the World Cup stage after their memorable third-place finish in 2002, with their inability to overcome Beach’s heroics proving costly.
Australia will now carry confidence into their next Group Stage match against co-hosts USA in Seattle on Friday at 10 pm, while Turkey will look to recover against Paraguay in Santa Clara on Saturday morning at 6 am.
