Hoima-based Kitara FC are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping department with an experienced Ugandan international currently playing abroad.
The club has set its sights on goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa as preparations intensify for their debut CAF Confederation Cup campaign, sources close to the team confirm.
The 29-year-old shot-stopper features for Ethiopian side Welwalo Adigrat FC, where he has been one of the standout performers this season.
Mutakubwa’s most notable moment came in the Ethiopian Cup, where his penalty shoot-out heroics guided Welwalo Adigrat to the final. His composure and command in high-pressure situations have impressed Kitara’s technical team, who are keen on securing a reliable last line of defense for continental competition.
For a club stepping onto the African stage for the first time, experience in knockout football is vital. Mutakubwa’s ability to deliver under pressure makes him an attractive option.
Beyond cup heroics, he has been consistent in the league, recording 12 clean sheets in 31 appearances—a tally that ranks him among the top goalkeepers in the Ethiopian Premier League this season. His shot-stopping, distribution, and aerial presence have been central to Welwalo’s defensive record and have kept him in contention for national team selection.
The move comes at a crucial time for Kitara FC. With Hoima City Stadium confirmed as their home venue for the Confederation Cup, the club is moving quickly to assemble a squad capable of competing both in Africa and domestically.
Adding a goalkeeper with international experience and recent cup pedigree aligns with Kitara’s ambition to make a strong impression on the continental stage while remaining competitive at home.
Neither Kitara FC nor Welwalo Adigrat have issued an official statement, though negotiations are believed to be in the early stages.
If completed, the signing would mark Mutakubwa’s return to Ugandan football after his spell abroad, bringing leadership and continental experience to the Kitara squad. For fans, it signals the club’s intent to take the Confederation Cup campaign seriously.
Kitara will open their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round ties in August 2026.
