World Cup Preview: Champions Argentina Begin Title Defence Against Determined Algeria

FIFA World Cup holders Argentina begin their title defence in Kansas City as they attempt to join football’s most exclusive group by becoming only the third nation to win back-to-back tournaments.

Standing in their way is an Algeria side arriving with confidence and hoping to recreate the historic moments that have defined their World Cup story.

Argentina Chase Another Place in History

Four years after Lionel Messi lifted the World Cup trophy in Qatar, Argentina return with the opportunity to achieve something only Italy and Brazil have managed before: successfully defend their crown.

The challenge is enormous, but Argentina enter the tournament with both history and form supporting their ambitions.

South American nations have dominated World Cups hosted in the Americas, winning seven of the last eight editions held in the region.

Under Lionel Scaloni, Argentina have continued their excellence, qualifying for a record-extending 14th consecutive World Cup finals after topping the CONMEBOL qualification standings.

Their current form is equally impressive, with 13 victories from their last 15 matches.

Algeria Believe They Can Challenge

Algeria arrive at their fifth World Cup appearance after another successful qualifying campaign, topping their group for the second consecutive time.

The Desert Warriors have been in strong form, winning 14 of their last 19 matches, while drawing three and losing two.

Their previous World Cup history has been mixed. Their famous breakthrough came in 1982, when they won two of their first three matches, while their only knockout-stage appearance came in 2014.

Since then, however, Algeria have struggled at the finals, winning just one of their last ten World Cup matches.

Head-to-Head History

These nations have met only once before, with Argentina winning a thrilling friendly encounter 4-3 in 2007.

That match was memorable for Lionel Messi, who scored his first international brace.

Key Players to Watch

All eyes will be on Lionel Messi as he prepares to make history by becoming the first player to appear at six different World Cups.

Messi already holds the record for World Cup appearances with 26 matches and has contributed 13 goals and eight assists in the tournament.

Algeria’s main threat is Mohamed Amoura, who was the top scorer in CAF qualifying with ten goals. Algeria have won all 13 matches in which Amoura has scored.

Argentina have confirmed Emiliano Martinez is available, while Nicolás Tagliafico remains doubtful. Algeria will be without Ramy Bensebaini.

Numbers That Matter

  • Argentina have won their last six World Cup matches against African opposition.
  • Argentina have won 13 of their last 15 matches.
  • The winning side led at half-time in Argentina’s last nine games.
  • Algeria have kept only one clean sheet in 13 World Cup matches.
  • None of Algeria’s last six matches saw both teams score.

Kick-off is set for Wednesday early morning at 4 am.
