Former Uganda national boxing team captain and ex-welterweight champion Ukasha Matovu is set to make his long-awaited return to competitive boxing after a year away from the sport.
Matovu will step back into the ring on Saturday at the Lugogo Arena when he faces Katabi’s Isaac Kasasa in a five-round light middleweight contest during the Uganda Boxing Champions League.
The former national team skipper has been out of action for the past year due to personal reasons, bringing a temporary halt to a career that had established him as one of the biggest attractions in the Boxing Champions League.
Before his break, Matovu was widely regarded as one of the competition’s most feared fighters. His explosive punching power and aggressive style made him a dominant figure in the welterweight division and a favourite among boxing fans.
His comeback will come in a new weight category, with the experienced boxer moving up to light middleweight. The switch has added further intrigue to Saturday’s contest as fans wait to see how he performs against a bigger opponent and whether he can reproduce the form that brought him success earlier in his career.
Speaking during the official weigh-in at Lugogo on Friday, Matovu struck a confident tone ahead of his return, insisting that he is back to reclaim his place at the top of Ugandan boxing.
“I have returned to reclaim my throne,” Matovu declared.
His opponent, Kasasa, will be hoping to spoil the comeback party, but much of the attention is expected to be on the returning former champion as he begins the next chapter of his boxing career.
The clash is expected to be one of the headline attractions on the Uganda Boxing Champions League card, with supporters eager to find out whether Matovu can mark his return with a statement victory.
