The rugby-mad city of Mbarara is gearing up for an electrifying weekend as it hosts the 6th circuit of the National Rugby 7s tournament.
The action that will be live on NBS Sport, from tomorrow, September 28 to Sunday, September 29 at Kakyeka Stadium, will be penultimate round of the 2024 Nile Special 7s Series, and promises high-stakes action that could make or break title aspirations.
This marks the seventh time Western Uganda has hosted a 7s circuit. The region’s rugby legacy includes memorable tournaments dating back to 2013, with powerhouse teams like Heathens, Kobs, and Pirates etching their names in the winner’s circle over the years.
The men’s competition is finely poised. Current leaders Heathens are placed in Pool A, while their closest rivals, Pirates, are in Pool D.
This setup tantalizes fans with the possibility of a high-octane quarterfinal clash if both teams finish in corresponding positions in their pools.
Heathens enter the tournament with momentum, having secured a thrilling 12-07 extra-time victory against Walukuba Barbarians in the previous circuit in Jinja.

The women’s competition adds another layer of intrigue, as series leaders Avengers and their primary challengers, Black Pearls, find themselves in the same pool for the first time this season.

Avengers come into Mbarara riding high after a dominant 35-00 victory over the Thunderbirds in Jinja, marking their third triumph of the 7s season.
However, with national team players absent due to Safari 7s preparations, the field is wide open for new stars to emerge.
The Mbarara 7s will showcase a blend of national powerhouses and local talent.
Host team MUSTangs will be joined by regional sides like Kigezi Silverbacks, Mbarara Titans, and Buddu Bears in the men’s competition.
The women’s tournament will see Buddu Cuppaz and Kigezi Queens flying the flag for Western Uganda.
