Kabugo: Beyond the Match Official and the Cause of His Sudden Death

The Uganda Premier League (UPL) has directed all clubs to observe a moment of silence across Match Day 8 fixtures in tribute to referee Peter Kabugo, who tragically passed away on Friday.

In a statement issued by the UPL Secretariat, the league expressed deep sorrow, describing Kabugo as an integral part of Uganda’s football fraternity, and outlining the minute of silence.

The minute of silence will begin after the referee’s whistle, and will span all league matches from tomorrow, Tuesday to Saturday, giving players, officials, and fans a chance to honour Kabugo’s memory.

Kabugo collapsed during the UPL game between SC Villa and UPDF at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, and was later pronounced dead.

The incident occured in the 70th minute of Villa’s dominant 5-0 victory, in the counter-attack leading to their fifth goal.

Despite swift intervention and an immediate ambulance ride to the nearby hospital, Kabugo was confirmed dead upon arrival, leaving the football community in mourning.

Kabugo’s passing has drawn an outpouring of condolences from various football bodies and officials, including CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, FUFA, SC Villa, and UPDF, who have all expressed sympathy with Kabugo’s family and friends.
