Taddeo Lwanga Gains Paul Put’s Confidence Ahead of SA, Congo Clashes

Uganda Cranes midfielder Taddeo Lwanga has received a second consecutive call-up under Coach Paul Put, marking a major shift in his role within the national team.

Initially overlooked by Put at the start of his tenure, Lwanga has now firmly reestablished himself in the lineup following an outstanding performance against South Sudan in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers.

This recognition follows Lwanga’s pivotal role in securing Uganda’s 1-0 victory in that crucial game, which left Uganda topping Group K and on the brink of qualification for the tournament.

In that match, Lwanga’s presence in midfield proved essential. His sharp passing accuracy, recorded at 86%, allowed him to control the flow of the game while creating vital opportunities.

Defensively, he demonstrated exceptional timing and aggression, winning 11 tackles that broke down South Sudan’s attacking moves and regained possession for Uganda.

Lwanga’s positioning was also on point, as he made three critical interceptions, each occurring at key moments that halted South Sudan’s attempts to break through.

Adding to his defensive impact, Lwanga pushed the ball forward with four successful dribbles, bringing creativity and offensive support that kept the Cranes on the front foot.

Coach Put’s decision to once again include Lwanga in the squad reflects a strong vote of confidence in the midfielder’s consistency and ability to perform under pressure.

With only one point needed from the upcoming games against South Africa and Congo to secure AFCON qualification, Lwanga’s skillset is expected to reinforce Uganda’s midfield, adding a crucial layer of experience and resilience.

For Lwanga, who plies his trade at APR in Rwanda, the opportunity to continue proving his worth with the Cranes has been a testament to his dedication.

His hard work and tactical acumen align with Coach Put’s approach of rewarding players based on performance and commitment, and the midfielder’s selection comes as no surprise to fans who have witnessed his journey.
