Ugandan football stars Khalid Aucho and Denis Onyango endured a challenging start to the CAF Champions League group stage with their respective teams, Young Africans (Yanga) and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Aucho’s Yanga Shocked at Home
Yanga suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sudan’s Al-Hilal Omdurman at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Tanzania in Group A.
Goals from Adama Coulibaly and Yasir Mozamil sealed the win for Al-Hilal in the second half.
Aucho, sidelined by an injury sustained during Uganda’s AFCON qualifier against Congo, missed the match entirely.
Sundowns Held in Pretoria
Mamelodi Sundowns, one of the tournament favorites, settled for a disappointing 0-0 draw against Maniema of DR Congo in Group B at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in South Africa.
Denis Onyango, the former Uganda Cranes captain, was an unused substitute.
Elsewhere: Al Ahly Impress
While Yanga and Sundowns struggled, defending champions Al Ahly began their campaign with a dominant 4-2 victory over Ivorian side Stade d’Abidjan in Group C.
The Egyptian giants demonstrated their intent to retain the title with a clinical performance at Al Salam Stadium in Cairo.
The competition continues with both Yanga and Sundowns needing improved performances to advance from their respective groups.
