The Uganda Premier League will soon use a video assistant referee (VAR), according to Ronnie Kalema, a member of the FUFA Executive Committee.
In an interview with NBS Sport this morning, Kalema said that the federation intended to use VAR in the Ugandan football levels.
“We have a discussion about introducing VAR in our Ugandan league.” “We want to be the number one nation to have VAR in Africa,” said Kalema.
He added” we want to improve the game of football and eliminate all errors, he also mentioned that they had the science and technology team at FUFA in the discussions”.
However, he omitted to clarify when the federation intends to implement the VAR implementation process.
This comes in response to the contentious decision by the FUFA Disciplinary Panel to replay the Stanbic Uganda Cup match between Bul FC and SC Villa.
SC Villa petitioned FUFA complaining about their disallowed goal in the match that was played on February 17 2023.
During an investigation, the assistant referee, Muyanga Khalid, recognized that he had erred in his decision to deny SC Villa their equalizer, according to the report from the referee’s disciplinary panel.
The idea of VAR may be a solution because this is not the first time that match officials have been held accountable for bad decisions in Ugandan football tournaments.
